CHAPTER SEVEN

DREW

Someone in the universe had it out for me. That was the only explanation as to why I was now stuck inside a shoebox of a cottage without a hope of escape with the one girl I shouldn’t—couldn’t—want. All while I could still taste her on my tongue from our too-brief make-out session the night before.

“Holy shit, I’m bored.” Clara lay on the bed on her stomach, her legs bent at the knees and swinging carelessly back and forth.

She was driving me out of my goddamn mind. And the worst part was, she wasn’t even aware of it. Seeing her in my hoodie was bad enough, but trying to keep my eyes off those gorgeous legs that were on full display might actually kill me. Especially when I could very clearly see her discarded dress from the night before tossed haphazardly in the corner, showing she’d done what I couldn’t. There’d been no way in hell I was going to take that off her. Not without her explicit consent—her explicit, sober consent.

Not even then.

The hoodie was long enough on her that it covered more than what she’d been wearing last night, but that didn’t help matters. In fact, it only made them worse because it stirred up all sorts of questions I had no business asking. Questions like, what was she wearing beneath it? Was she wearing anything at all?

“Let’s do something,” she said, snapping me out of my staredown with an article of clothing. “I can’t believe they don’t even have a TV in here.”

“Pretty sure the guests don’t usually stay in their rooms when there’s a whole ocean a hundred yards away.”

“Well, then we shouldn’t either. C’mon, let’s go exploring, like you said.”

“Clara.” I met her overeager eyes, then pointedly looked outside. “Did you forget it’s raining?”

“So?” She slid off the bed, the hem of the hoodie riding up enough to tease a hint of barely there fabric underneath.

I didn’t know whether to thank or curse the universe that she was wearing something more than just my sweatshirt.

“So,” I repeated. “It’s raining.”

She breathed out a laugh. “You’re not gonna melt. Besides, it’s not storming. No lightning means it’s safe and thus the perfect time.”

“To do what?”

“I don’t know… Get into trouble. Find some hidden cave or just dance in the rain.” She shrugged, then eyed me with a narrowed gaze. “Don’t you ever wanna do something crazy?”

I ran a hand along my jaw as I studied her. “Not really. I was the product of someone doing something crazy, and my momma paid for that. And between Finn and me, that was always his job. I was the cleanup crew.”

One of us had to be the responsible one, and it sure as shit wasn’t my twin. He’d always managed to find trouble, and I was just along for the ride. Those roles hadn’t changed.

“Really? That’s…pretty sad, actually.” Her bottom lip pushed out in a pout before her eyes lit up. She strode straight to me and grabbed my hand, tugging me to stand.
